What is a vehicle tire change?

Most experts advise vehicle owners to get a complete tire change every 6 years, or every 36,000 to 75,000 miles depending on the vehicle. Changing two tires at a time and rotating the old ones is also a solution for tires that still have tread.

How to determine if I need a tire change

  1. Check the tire tread depth regularly using a tread depth gauge or the “penny test.” If the tread depth is worn down to 2/32 of an inch (1.6 millimeters) or less, it’s time to replace the tire.
  2. Inspect the tire for any visible damage such as cuts, bulges, cracks, or punctures. If you notice any of these issues, replace the tire as soon as possible, as they can compromise safety.
  3. Consider replacing tires older than six years. Rubber deteriorates over time, increasing the risk of tire failure, regardless of tread depth.
  4. If the tire shows uneven wear patterns, such as excessive wear on one side or the center, it may indicate alignment or suspension issues. In such cases, replace the tire and address the underlying problem to prevent premature wear on the new tire.
  5. Replace punctured tires with a spare tire or a new tire if the damage is severe or the spare tire is not available.
  6. While the legal minimum tread depth is typically 2/32 of an inch, it’s advisable to replace tires before they reach this limit for optimal safety and performance, especially in wet or snowy conditions where adequate tread depth is crucial for traction.

How often should I inspect my tires?

Regularly inspecting your tires for these signs of wear and damage and replacing them as needed is essential for maintaining your vehicle’s safety and performance on the road.
